Hiram Barcas
22-05-2009, 05:10 PM
Full Name: Hiram Gabriel Barcas
Age: 35
Appearance: Hiram seems to be a roughneck. A smile can rarely be seen on his face, having a scar across his right eye. Both of his eyes are dark and almost in the colour of black. His hair is dark brown and his skin is tanned, giving him a more exotic look. Hiram does not joke, does not laugh nor do he like to socialize with other people. You'll find him as a very grumpy and angry person, although everything has its reasons.
Work-description: Being in the Militia is the only thing Hiram has to live for. He has no other ambitions than to rise within the ranks and maybe one day join the naval part of Yew.
Personality: Hiram is a very bitter man, and he doesn't let many people in to bond a friendship with him. His only focus is to serve the Militia as the best of his ability. With his Axe and Crossbow he is both dangerous in close combat as well as distant. He wouldn't think twice before chopping an enemy head off.
Virtues:
Honour: Hiram is a man of his word and holds onto each oath or promise he makes. Seeing other people dishonour their job is the worst thing Hiram could imagen to see.
Humility: To know your place is very important for Hiram. Even if your skill would be far from what a normal footmans would be, he still doesn't think he should be anything but a footman, until he's given a promotion.
Background: Hiram was born and raised in Magincia. His parents were quite early with sending him to the naval academy and he joined there at the age of fourteen. During many years of training Hiram found himself amongst the more skilled and talented group. At the age of seventeen he was sent out on his first patrol on a Sloop called Audrina.
The sloop was a fast ship, and as it was Hirams first time, he was anxious to see action. And yet only a few sea-miles away from their Island, dark smoke was rising over the ocean. With the wind blowing freshly, the sails were fully unfurled and the Sloop took up great speed. As they came closer they noticed two ships, one Corvette, topped the flag of Nujel'm and a frigate, with the Jolly Roger at its highest mast.
The crew of Audrina approached quickly, the two ships in battle all ready at boarding range. The Pirates hadn't noticed the Sloop yet, which was to their disadvantage. Hiram was busy loading the cannons, and the Sloops commander was eager to get the cannon balls flying through the air. The first volley was aimed at the front of the Pirate ship, Audrina quickly getting in position of boarding. By now the pirates had noticed the Sloop and confusion stirred on the deck. Everyone was ready to board, with the Commander in charge. As the Commander turned about to shout his charge, an arrow appeared sticking through his throat. And only a gurgling sound could be heard as the man fell into the deep ocean beneath. The crew was chocked, some of them tearing the blood of the commander of their faces. Hiram saw his chance, and quickly took command. "TAKE NO PRISONERS!" was the last words that came out from Hirams mouth, before the excitement and adrenaline took all of his senses.
Only a few minutes after, the Pirates had been defeated. And the crew from the Nujel'm corvette, and the crew from Audrina shouted their "Huzzahs!" and took later care of the wounded. The Corvette was escorted to the Magincian harbour for repairs and aid. And Hiram was faced with recognition as the highlight of the battle.
Hiram rose quickly in the ranks during the years that passed by he put a stop to most of the pirate attacks. And assaulted an known Pirate stronghold on Buccaneers Den. At the age of 30 he was now assigned with his own Ship. A Corvette by the name of Leyla after his wife.
It was a normal day just like any else out on the sea. The sun was setting slowly along the horizon, and Leyla was gracefully floating back towards home. Hiram looked at his crewmen which also had been given some time to enjoy the quiet evening on the deck, everyone sitting on the rails, singing a tune which everyone had heard, many times before. Hiram told his First Navigator to take the rudder. Hiram left the rudder deck and walked down the stairs to join the singing. It was a perfect evening, an evening that made life what it was, beautiful. "CAPTAIN! SMOKE IS RISING ABOVE OUR PEARL!" the man in the crows nest shouted. Everyone was shocked, looking at the smoke by the horizon. It was not as easy to see any more, as darkness had fallen over the sky. "READY YOUR ARMS! LOAD THE CANNONS!" Hiram shouted. Three names repeating in his head:
Layla...Lisa...Patrick...
As Layla an it's crew moored by the docks, there were several boats leaving the docks. Hiram could spot some of the naval soldiers, hearing them shout "Turn back!". Hiram stared at him, quietly, despising the coward.
The landing boats reached the dock and the crew was ready to wait for the next order, yet Hiram spotted terror in their eyes as well as a daemon was approaching the harbour, many of the soldiers were fleeing the battle. Hiram was able to rally a few of them, forming into a larger squad of soldiers. ARCHERS! Hiram shouted, VOLLEY ON THE DAEMON!. The volley stopped the charging daemon and it fell to the ground. MEN, ADVANCE WITH ME!. Hiram commanded.
The heat was intense from the burning buildings. And the daemons came in waves. A few surviving soldiers joined into Hirams squad as they pressed on into the city. The battle was fierce, and many of the men we're covered in blood, looking like they just came from the abyss themselves. Hiram could see the town centre in the distance, civilians quickly running out from their shelters behind the cleared way. The fight seemed to be ever lasting, as daemons came out from every street, smaller as well as bigger ones. Throwing their magic at Hirams men. Suddenly they seemed to stop spawning around them and the ones that remained was beaten to the ground.
Hiram watched the city centre. Only one more street. Hiram thought for himself.
During the retreat of the daemons, the legion of men advanced to the city centre. At the city centre most of the soldiers froze as a loud roar could be heard from the distance. Hiram was fast to set up a defensive perimeter. And if hell hadn't all ready broken loose. A blue giant daemon with four arms escalated from one of the close buildings, and charged the perimeter. It swooped it's hand over the first line of men, making them fly through the air, landing in various pyres scattered across the town centre. Hiram looked quickly up at the podium, noticing a cannon that had been dragged up. He took four of his men along with him to the cannon, as the archers hailed arrows on the beast. The cannon was loaded, and with a loud bang, the cannon ball was flying through the air, blowing the daemons face into smithereens.
All went quiet as the giant daemon fell to the ground. Hiram quickly assembled some of the soldiers to take care of the wounded. But he was interrupted by loud screaming noises. He looked down the street to the North, west and east. Seeing daemons advancing towards them. This time Hirams platoon suffered all ready from heavy losses, and some were even retreating back to the docks. Hirams First Navigator, which had also survived the battle, came to Hiram saying "Captain, we must retreat." Hiram knew of this himself, looking down the street where his house was located...
The names echoed in his head once more:
Layla...Lisa...Patrick...
The retreat to the docks went swiftly. The wounded was taken care of once they arrived. Hiram looked into the water, which seemed to be an ocean of blood. Then at the soldiers, waiting for his orders.
I want a blockade built, shutting the passage from the city to the docks. Yet, keep in mind there may yet be survivors. You have all sworn Oath, to defend the inhabitants of this city, and you shall fight by your Oath!
Even if there's not much left of the city, we need to protect those that can still be evacuated. AM I CLEAR!?
An "Huzzah!" was echoing through the night, which was far from over...
It had gone two days, the barricade being attacked several times a day, and the wounded transports left more frequently. Luckily words had it that Trinsic had opened their ports for the fleeing people. Yet none had sent reinforcements. Hiram was doubting they'll be able to hold the barricade for another night. When suddenly a ship appeared in the horizon. Wearing the colours of the Guardsmen Militia of Yew.
