Task: Plague Sample Gathering In The Infected Zone.
Members of Party: Alexander Frost(Trainee), Avera(Trainee), Nathaniel Hawk(Trainee), Nikolai Karalov(Rookie Guard).
I met with the others in the keep to discuss the plans for the day. A task was laid before us to go into the infected zone and try to gather samples to help find a cure for this horrid plague. Hawk asked for a volunteer to lead the party and I took the opportunity. This would be my first expedition where I was in charge. Lives are now being trusted to my decisions and I planned on making the best of it.
We headed off to the east into the infected zone. Early on we saw nothing unusual, a few large spiders and an Ogre. They were vanquished quickly and accurately. A bit farther down the road I spotted some tracks. In calling over Hawk we confirmed they were just deer tracks, nothing interesting. We rounded a corner and that is where we heard the sounds. Howls and screeches pierced the forest that surrounded us. A nearby pack of wolves was seen, but we all knew that these sounds did not come from the wolves, they had this....evil about them.
I ordered our party to tighten up our formation. Close together we walked down the trail eyes peeled for any shape or movement...and that is when they attacked. Three plagued came at us swiftly. I ordered the party to "form up" as well to "fire at will". We worked together as one and vanquished two of the plagued. The third ran off cackling into the woods. We took this moment of down time to gather some samples from the plagued we had slain. While taking samples more plague arrived. These plague were different though. Something about them hinted they were not the same kind of plague we had been fighting before that. These plague seemed to stalk us. They walked in a circle around us and laughed and cackled. One even had a half-alive rabbit hanging from its mouth, blood trailing from it and on the plagued ones face. The plagued as a whole rushed into our party attacking with a strategy about them, not the usual wild careless rampage. We stayed together and fought them, they were stronger then others but we were holding our own. That was until something went wrong....
The plagued seemed to be changing ranks fighting as we did, they would switch and bring in a fresh member of their pack while the other could get back to full force. One ran into the woods for an unknown reason and two of the party ran after them. This broke formation and made us weaker. I tried to have us reform the formation but it was too late. The plague had us split and we were getting worn down. Seeing what was happening I found it best to order the retreat back to the keep. We started our way back down the trail but the plague were relentless. They attacked from all angles with blazing speed. About half way back, Hawk went down. He was hurt and I knew it, one of the plagued had torn through his armor and gashed him on the inner thigh. I knew he needed a healer and immediate attention on the wound.
We pressed on getting almost back to the keep when one lunged up at me while I was reaching for an arrow. The plagued knocked me down and was growling and laughing, blood and other gross colored liquids leaking from is mouth. Avera took over lead while I was occupied with the plagued one. For the record she did a great job. I managed to find my arrows and thrust one up into the plagued ones eye socket. It screeched and lurched enough for me to muscle it off me. I managed to get back into formation where I noticed, even though injured, Hawk had taken command of our party. Things slowly turned our way and even worn down we fought off the plagued. I managed to get some cloth from one of the plagued which I found torn off and attached to one of my arrowheads.
Back in the keep we put all gathered samples into a bag and turned them in. We removed our armor and prepared to be disinfected. I noticed the wound on hawks leg had gotten worse, and it was covered in puss as well and losing more blood. He insisted he was okay, but I think his courage was covering something quite serious. Avera, Nikolai, and myself were disinfected in the water tough then sanitized and refilled it with clean water for future use. We were then dismissed for the evening, to do as we pleased.
I would hope the samples we provided will help to cure this blasted plague. As well the way these plague acted has me concerned. It seems they are getting....well smarter...if that is even possible. This is something I also think we need to look into to help our future tactics against the plagued. I also hope Hawk is fine, he is a good man.
