The State of Affairs in the Glade

A. PATROL SIZE AND COMPOSITION:
Killian, Veteran Besieger.
Alexander Fraser, Veteran Besieger.
Raphael Ne‘Filim, Rookie Waywatcher.
Brian Woodhouse, Trainee.

B. OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate the state of affairs in the district of the Glade following the recent disturbances in Yew; to canvas the opinions of the local inhabitants on the relevant issues of women‘s rights and liberal thinking in general.

C. DATE OF DEPARTURE AND RETURN:
October 13th.

D. LOCATION:
The district of the Glade was chosen due to the local inhabitants being representative of the Yewish population at large. It is a common fact that most of Yew‘s population consists of peasants, and their opinions are usually dependant upon the thinking of the farm households of the central districts. Therefore, the Glade being one of the central districts inhabited almost solely by farm owners, it is perfect for inferring the dominant opinion of the people of the whole Yew Protectorate.

E. RESULTS OF ENCOUNTERS:
We have visited and interviewed almost all households in the area. The interviews were conducted in a most professional fashion, as evident from there being no permanent damage nor complaints from the residents of the area of the operation.

F. CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS:
We have found the core population to be utterly unaffected by the recent disturbances and even strongly opposed to the ideas of the "freedom fighters". The peasants are utterly dedicated to traditional values espoused by the Church. Surrendering to the grievances of a small yet vocal minority lead by bored housewives of Militia Officers would posse a great risk of alienating the majority of Yew‘s population from the rule of the Protectorate and could increase riots on a massive scale. Complete repression of the protests is advised.

Jenny peered into the street from behind the curtains. A group of four guardsmen marched from building to building and she was afraid they would see her and then barge inside her home, too. Two of them were Besiegers and she knew that to be noticed by them usually meant the end of one’s life... or worse. Thus she tried to conceal herself behind the green curtains as best she could without losing track of their movement.

She was sure their visit had something to do with the women protesting for their rights recently. The whole population was quietly in an uproar over what had happened at the massacre. Jenny herself believed it must have been either the Church or the Militia or both who slaughtered the poor girls. They all wanted to maintain their iron grip. And now they had sent the worst of the worst to ensure the people complied.

Jenny followed the small patrol as they went from one house to another. In the farm of the Leighs there was much ruckus and breaking of glass while the patrol ‘interviewed’ the family there – the Leighs were very open-minded, Jenny knew. And how pleased the patrol seemed when they left the house of that cursed pig Jeremy! Not a day went by that his wife wouldn’t be seen without a new mark of his fist upon her face. How disgusting it was to see him wave to the departing guardsmen, his hands filled with gold they had given him!

She saw how they raided the home of the Benthams, carrying out their books by the handful, pilling them and burning them outside their very doorstep. They shouted threats and abuse and promised a similar fate to anybody who would want for any changes.

And Jenny saw the pale face of Maisel as she left her shack after her interview. The poor woman looked even more terrified than she usually was; she just scurried back into the farm and back to her works, though not a week before Maisel had vowed to stand up to her horrible husband during the women’s secret meeting.

Jenny’s resolve to rebel plummeted. What could she do against these brutes with weapons and authority? She was lucky to avoid their inquisition this time but who could tell if they would not find her in some dark alley in the future? Jenny was sick and tired of being abused left and right. But now, she was more frightened than ever before.
