At the appointed time, three besiegers and two recruits were present for the patrol. This seemed like a fine number to be taking along to the planned location of Despise. Yet, due to my vocal opinion of the entertainment value of patrols, I decided that we'd spice it up a little for the recruits. They were each given an iron heater shield and a pack of bombs each, to give them a feel of what it's like to be a besieger.

After...travelling to the dungeon, we waded into the first floor. This place was about as dangerous as a Covian recruit, filled only with the surprisingly weak and stupid two headed ettins. Still, they gathered in great numbers and provided us an excellent opportunity for the recruits to get used to aiming bombs at clusters of foes for maximum effectiveness.

Eventually however we moved on to the second level. I had imagined that the monsters here might prove at least somewhat challenging, but it appears that the huge 6ft-hammer-wielding cyclops' as well as the spell wielding gangly bastards who seem to enjoy being maced just aren't what they used to be. Maybe due to widespread cases of rheumatism or something - it is pretty damp down there. In any case, we found them too weak to be bothered killing them, and instead moved on to the lords of the ogres. Personally, I think we should find and kill the ogre king - then no one could award titles to ogres and magically make them ten times as tough. In any case, these too were fairly easily handled on their own.

At this point I was quite impressed by the recruits efforts - their healing had been swift and neither had fallen yet. So, I decided to offer them a challenge to kill an ogre lord between them. They went ahead and gave it a good shot but sadly failed. Still, it was a difficult task for a trainee and footman and the fact they half killed it shows they have promise.

Finally, we marched onto the island where the ogre ruling class appeared to dwell. There we got the danger we'd been looking for as we took them down three at a time. Naturally we stood firm and healed furiously, until I judged it best to withdraw.

After we'd gotten home, I dismissed the men and let the recruits keep their heater shields and remaining bombs for private practice. If they use either on duty, they'll get a black mark.
