After I had saved the innocent from the vile brigands in the Yew woods it appeared they wanted an escort to Cove. It was a long trek but we finally made it.

Okay so there was this guy on the road on my way back from Cove towards Yew. He claimed his name was markus and I beleive I had seen him somewhere before in Yew. I presumed he was someone to be trusted as he claimed to know Floria from the waywatchers and that the supplies he had in his pack horse was for Floria herself.

So I escorted this civilian through some woody routes to the Abbey of Yew to avoid any vesperians on the way since we were near their territory and eventaully found ourselves at the abbey. I beleive I made a good effort to make this escort as well pulled off as possible by taking precautions of heading through the woods so we wouldn't be found by any enemies along the way.

[OOC: I beleive it was linked in with Markus' event in this thread http://www.grd-europa.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1897 ]

On patrol around Yew Abbey, I came across a citizen seeking safe escort to a far off city. What Guardsmen wouldnt help one of the law abiding citizens of the realm...

It would seem that there is a lot of travellers on the road to Jhelom today ...

Escorting citizens can be a dangerous business ... no wonder travellers need the strong arm of a guard to protect them...

I was strolling around New Haven, when this fellow named Lewis grabbed hold of me and said he wanted some help. He spoke very fast, and seemed very eager. Being a representative of the Guardsmen Militia, I figured I'd help out a citizen in our name and make us look good (as if we didn't look good already).

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort1.jpg

Lewis tells me that he is new to town, and needs to find the local bowyer. As I know New Haven fairly well, I realize that it will only take a few minutes of my time to escort this stranger to the Warriors Guild Hall. It turned out I was wrong...

As we start walking through the town centre square, Lewis suddenly stops, looks in his purse, and asks me if we can just swing by the bank. I instinctively hesitate, but want to come off as a helpful and kind old chap, and escort him inside. He has some problems identifying himself to the banker, and then changes his mind several times on the amount of cash he wants to withdraw, all while chit-chating with bypassers, other bank clerks, and with me. Needless to say, I was starting to get irritated.

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort2.jpg

Finally, Lewis withdraws a rather large amount of gold, and we can at last get moving to the bowyer. As we reach the Warriors Guild Hall, he looks around and asks if we can have a little talk. At this point I'm very annoyed with this stranger, but figure that I could give up another minute of my time for him. We sit down outside the Warriors', and he bursts into tears. I'm not at all prepared for this, as Lewis was nothing but loud and cheerful so far, in a rather blunt manner. I ask him what's wrong, and the sobbing man tells me that his wife just left him, took three kids with her, and that he had come to New Haven to get a new start. He had decided to gather supplies and spend some time in the wild to clear his mind, but now felt very uncertain of this decision. Being the kind man that I am, I ensure him that it is definately a wise decision to leave society for a while (I do not want to encounter him again). I suggest that he spends one last night in town, makes the most of it, and then hits the road in the morning early. This seems to comfort the man, and he asks if I could join him in this last night in town. Again, I'm taken by surprise, and again I'm hesitating. However, things seemed quiet around the Keep when I left, and I decided that it wouldn't hurt to take some time to bond with the locals of New Haven. Besides, Lewis offered to pay for everything.
- Splendid! the man bursts, as he stands up and starts heading up the street.
- Let's get something to eat!

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort7.jpg

We head to the Gentle Rest, the local inkeep, for a hardy meal. Lewis offers me a beer, but I politely decline and ask the inkeeper for some water. Lewis shows proof of an impressive appetite, and his brutish charm is starting to grow on me.

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort3.jpg

After the meal, we are both very full and stumble out from the Gentle Rest. I thank Lewis for the meal, and start to wish him good luck on his upcomming journey.
- Oh, but we've only just started! he proclaims.
- What else is here to do?
I try to recall what there is to do, that doesn't take much effort as I'm feelin' exhausted from the recent meal. So, we slowly make our way to The Proscenium, where the local talent Mason the bard performs a musical stand-up comedy act. I find myself laughing so hard that my stomach aches, and make a mental note to come here more often.

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort6.jpg

After the show, I feel in a very playful mood. Mason the bard had made some jokes about childish games, and I now can't for the world understand why, but I suggested we'd go off into the woods and play a game of hide-and-seek. I realized that, being an aspiring waywatcher, finding me could take all day for him, so I did not try to hide too well. Ducking under a tree would have to do...

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort4.jpg

We don't play for long though, as Lewis says he's not feeling very well. When I come to think of it, he did look somewhat pale. I hadn't wanted to mention it, but he had also constantly been passing gas since the middle of the performance at The Proscenium. I tell him not to worry, and I help him down to the Healers of New Haven. After a quick examination, they say he's just eaten too much, too quickly, and had a few too many beers. Strengthened by the news that he's not suffering from a disease, Lewis lights up and we head out again.

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort5.jpg

He finally seems ready to go to his first destination - the bowyer in the Warriors Guild Hall. We start heading there, but as we pass the inkeep he suggets having another quick meal. I'm beginning to understand why his stomach isn't in top condition, and kindly tells him that it might not be a good idea.

http://www.gustnet.se/uo/Escort8.jpg

At last, we reach Akala the bowyer, and I can head back to the Keep. Lewis thanks me for keeping me company, for escorting him to the warriors guild, and for giving him new hope for the future. I wish him good luck, and we part ways. I'll be keeping an eye out for Lewis when I wander the woods from now on, to make sure that he's doing well, and to be able to hide in time.

On duty in the Keep, I walked to the Crossroads and saw two gangs of brigands. One of the civilians they had captured was already dead but one was still stood shackled to a tree. I floored the brigands and rushed to help the woman. She needed an escort to Jhelom, which I was obliged to give. Although shaken up, the woman was not injured, thankfully.

This is a hard report to write, since thinking back on all that happened makes me feel violated and sad. This is a tale of what can happen, if you at the wrong moment let your guard down. If you blindly trust people along the way.

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/7696/goingmental001.png

I woke up on the cold stone floor of a small cell, barred by a sturdy metal door. My head was hurting and I did not remember how I got there. As I stood up and tried to collect my thought, I felt faint and dizzy. No matter how hard I tried I could not grasp my thoughts by anything but their tail. I remembered odd and strange fragments of faces, blood and panic. But I did not remember if the blood or the panic was that of my own. All I could hear was a steady sound of something hitting a wall, and a whimpering and sad sound of a woman over and over again saying "I am a good girl, I am a good girl, I am a good girl." to herself.

As I tried to move to the door, I almost fell over. I had to give up and instead sit down on the bed. It did not take long until I fell into an uneasy sleep, haunted by strange nightmares and horrible accusing voices, calling me a murderer.

The very next day I woke up from a faint knocking on the door. In the door-frame stood a woman with a soft and motherly smile, even though she was not much older than me. With the cell so dark, and the corridor so much brighter, I at first believed her to be a divine creature, sent to rescue me. As she spoke, I felt myself warm to her melodic voice, and some of the terrified unease within me was put to rest.
"Hello there, Zelest. Mind if I call you Zellie?"
"N-no..."
"Do you know why you are here, Zellie?"
"I... I remember... blood."
"Do you remember what you did?"
"What... I... did?", my thoughts felt slow, as if moving in tar.
"Oh dear, still don't remember? Don't you remember the people you killed?"
"W...what?", I felt chilled to the bone. My thoughts were racing, conflicting, but still felt very distant.
"The family, you killed in cold blood?"

I felt myself starting to black out and my memories from here are distant and dreamlike. She visited me for what might have been every few hours to every few days. Fed me, gave me medicines and made sure I was comfortable. After a while I was allowed outside my cell during some hours during the day. I was allowed to enter the common room, with some of the other inmates at the Britannia Asylum.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8730/goingmental002.png

Lenore - as the woman was called - told me she was a healer. Not the kind who heals wounds of the body, but the wounds of the mind. She told me that I had done something awful. That I needed to remember what I had done, to help me put it behind me. We had sessions where everyone in the group was allowed to talk and share. Their tales were truly horrible. Tales of abuse, murder and other unspeakable deeds. It was under one of those sessions, that I - together with the other inmates - was able to remember what I had done.

http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/1438/goingmental004.png

It all happened a few days ago. I was out on patrol in the middle of the night when I met a young woman who had lost her way in the woods. She told me where she lived, together with her husband and her sister, at the edge of Yew. I gave her my brightest smile and followed her home, since I for once knew the way. As I came there, she told me to enter the house so we could settle the payment. Meanwhile I have no real need for money, I thought it could make for a nice addition for the Guardsmen Coffer.

When I entered the room, the first and only thing I saw was the husband. I noticed his pointed ears and drew my sword. Without any hesitation I ran for him and cut his stomach up, making him fall down on the floor, screaming and bleeding. This was when I noticed I had been wrong. This was not an elf, but a human. It had all been a trick of light. I felt panic rise in me and I started laughing manically. The young woman whom I had escorted drew her sword and charged me. I met her charge and ran her though with my sword, taking her own sword from her hands.

As I turned to the terrified wife, she backed away from me, stumbled on her long skirt and fell down on the floor.
"P-p-please! Don't kill me! I'll do anything!"
"I will kill every last one of you!" I laughed as I stabbed her. Blood bubbled out from her mouth as she looked at me with huge, and terrified eyes. With a twist of the sword, I saw the life slowly drain from her face, until she too was dead.

My memories failed me, but I was crying so harshly I couldn't say anything more. Those few inmates with a little brain left patted my shoulder in some sort of comfort. Lenore gave me an embrace and managed to comfort me. She gave me something to help me sleep, and I was once more put in my cell. I was told that I was well on my way of becoming better now, but I could not comprehend why, since I had never felt as bad in my whole life.

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/8722/goingmental005.png

However... something felt as if it was off-centre. I could not gather my thoughts enough to put my finger on it. But something just didn't feel right. Another few days went, and I remembered the story in better detail over more sessions. After one session, Lenore went to prepare my medicine. She told me to stay by the door, but I did sneak a peek from around the corner. I saw her put nightshade extract into the concoction which she had me drink. Having read a report about nightshade before, I did remember how it is not allowed to use. Not even for medication. Even though I could not remember the effects they are said to have.

After this day I started pretending to drink the potion. It was quite hard, but since I had earned her trust she did not always look at me when I drank it. Also, if I was in a situation where I was forced to drink it, I would make myself throw up at the first unguarded moment.

The story now changed.

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/8751/goingmental004true.png

I had escorted the young woman though the forest and arrived at her home. She told me to go inside, so we could settle the payment. I thought that even though I did not need any extra coin, it would be good for the Guardsmen coffer. As I went inside, I was met by metallic smell of blood. I dashed inside, holding my lantern high to be able to see better. I ran to one of the two people whose lifeless bodies were haphazardly collapsed on the floor.

"Ma'am? Are you okay? Oh God! Lenore! Call the healer! She's still breathing!", I called to my travelling companion as I reached for my bandages. I turned my head sideways just in time to see the pummel of Lenore's sword swing towards my head. I was out cold.

But I did remember, Lenore - the one who told me she as a mental healer - hit me over the head. She was the one responsible for the death's of her sister and - yes, I remembered - her sister's husband.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/9800/goingmental006.png

I was filled with rage, and just before the next group session I got my chance to attack the woman. When I saw her I put my hands around her neck and started to squeeze. The woman was so surprised she was not able to fend for herself. I saw everything though a red haze.
"How could you?! Why did you do such a thing?! Kill your own family! That's the most despicable... I hate you!" Her eyelids started to flutter and her eyes rolled back to expose only their whites to me. Something called for me in the back of my still drug hazed and adrenalin-filled head. The words of my mentor, Nathaniel Hawk, entered my mind. The ideals and code of the marksmen. Honour and Excellence. When someone taunts you, or have done you have been done wrong, prove you are above their level. I let her go and she fell down, barely conscious and gasping for breath.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6874/goingmental007.png

It wasn't too hard to get my old gear back and arrange for getting transportation from the asylum back to Yew. Tied up, I took Lenore to The Court of Truth. Justice was very swift from there. I told my story, she hers and after a few hours of persuasive interrogation, Lenore sang out that she was indeed the one who had murdered her sister and her sister's husband. She had murdered them both, since she felt the husband had soiled the pure and clean sister.
"No one touches my sister! She is mine! Mine alone! No one shall have her!", and now I guess no one will. I was to be a scape goat for what had happened. If she indeed could convince me I was insane and I would confess the crime, no one would question it. And she was not far from succeeding.

I went to see her, just once, after I had learned the truth. To confront the woman whom I had felt such... sister-like fondness for. Whom I had thought was there to save me. I thought I would feel the blind rage from before, however I did not. I felt strangely empty. Almost a bit sad for the woman, not sure she actually understood what she had done.

We exchanged a few words, and then I left for Stonekeep. An escort from the woods in southern Yew which was to end in a small house, ended instead in the Prison of Britannia.

While I was working in the warehouse, replenishing my personal stock of bandages - along with the Guardsmen's bandages, a man came knocking on the door. His name was Cain and he expressed worry about some very large footprints he had seen in the woods. I told him everything should be fine, but I said that if he was worried, I could follow him along to his destination.

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/8778/escort001.png

He said he was going to the bank of Yew and I nodded, and lead him on his way. The whole trip was quite event-less. But we talked a bit about the nice road, and I explained about the sabotage, however he knew nothing about it and suggested Orc attacks.

I left him at the bank in the Abbey and we said our goodbyes.

As I wandered through New Haven, I was shocked at just how many lost people that city holds. Person after person, begging to be shown where something or other is. A bank. A Swordsman. A carpenter. I used my knowledge to help three of the many lost individuals this evening.

Deciding to visit the Abbey today, I ran into a messenger who wished to go to Cove. Deciding that I could visit the Abbey anytime I wished, I accepted the messenger's request and took her under my wing.

It was a quiet walk through Yew, so Doris and I picked started talking. As soon as we reached the moongate, we quickly took a small break. Within minutes we returned to our journey.

Unlike Yew though, the Minoc / Vesper forest was filled with Skeletons. Protecting my ward, I kept her to my back and disabled the skeletons one by one. Continuing on our way, I we soon reached Cove.

Give me her thanks and a quick kiss on the cheek, Doris ran off into the city of Cove. I turned, slightly blushing, and returned to my home of Yew.
