Kathris was born in North Yew, the only child of a fisherman and his wife. Her childhood was happy and secure until, when she was twelve years old, her father was lost at sea in a great storm. Times became hard for her and her mother - Kathris grew vegetables in their small plot of land, and learned to hunt for meat.
When Kathris was fourteen her mother married a local farmer, and life became easier. She tried to accept her new step-father, although she was uncomfortable in his presence, but then he began to make unmistakable advances to her. She tried to keep out of his way, but one night when her mother was away on a shopping trip he came into her bedroom.
Kathris fought him off and ran into the night barefoot and in her shift. She ran, sobbing with terror, to her grandmother in South Yew. The old lady, her father's mother, was a local wisewoman and herbalist; she made Kathris welcome and set about teaching her to protect herself and keep out of danger. When her parents came looking for her she was nowhere to be seen.
Her grandmother's favourite saying was "the best way to avoid trouble is not to be there" and Kathris learned the skill of disappearing quickly.
After five years her grandmother died. Her last advice to Kathris was to seek safety by joining the local militia.
Kathris is very wary of men, and won't hesitate to strike if she feels threatened. In a group, or in public she is comfortable but prefers the company of women. She is happy in the Militia and finds the discipline reassuring.
She is loyal to her comrades and content to fight at their side, but feels drawn to the Waywatchers where she feels her skills would be best used.
