Crouching over the bear she'd just killed with her bow, Verity watched a platoon of the Guardsmen Militia heading for the moongate. They were joking among themselves as they went by, and they looked carefree and happy in their service.

In the five years since her boorish husband had run off with a travelling musician, taking all of her meagre savings, Verity had been looking after herself. It had been a relief to be rid of his demands, ill temper and dirty habits, and she had made the most of her freedom - she smiled to herself reminiscently - but it would be nice not to worry where the next meal was coming from.

If she joined the Militia food, clothing and accommodation would be free. If that meant yes-sir no-sir three bags full-sir and saluting everything that moved, she reckoned that was a fair exchange. Besides, there were some good-looking men in the Militia, it might be amusing.

Shouldering her bow, she set off for Stonekeep to volunteer her services.
